Lance and Martha Wetmore operated Bittersweet Farm in Bethany CT for more than 35 years. A family horsemanship tradition began in the 1940s with Lance's father and grew from a hobby into a business.
Their daughter Shauna Perry joined the Bittersweet team in 2012 before formally taking over ownership and head training duties in 2014. A lifelong horsewoman, Shauna grew up showing morgans under her parents' guidance throughout her junior exhibitor career. As a professional she has trained and shown numerous successful competitors to championships on the CHSA and Tri-State circuits in the Jumper, Western Pleasure, Hunter/English Pleasure, and Versatility divisions, including being named Tri-State Versatility Champion for three consecutive years. Since joining the Bittersweet team, Shauna has continued to instill the pride, love, and work ethic of being a successful rider and horseman in her students. Shauna and the rest of the Bittersweet staff pride themselves on bringing out the best in each horse and rider team with continued guidance and support from Lance and Martha Wetmore's decades of experience.
Pictured here driving Wynter Thyme Manor's UVM Alegro during the CT Morgan Hall of Fame Induction in 2014, Lance Wetmore is a two time World Champion in the Morgan carriage division. He also earned a Champion Single Driver title at the Walnut Hill invitational competition and is a past president of both the Connecticut Horse Council and Connecticut Morgan Horse Association. During his lengthy show and training career Lance has shared his talent and knowledge while starting countless young horses and riders, coaching many to Regional, Grand National, and World Champion titles in the carriage and hunter divisions. He continues to share his wisdom and vast horse sense with the Bittersweet Farm family while trying his hand at retirement.
Together Lance and Martha also developed a small boutique breeding operation under the 'Beta B' prefix. Beginning with New England Morgan 4 Year Old Park Harness Champion Beta B Galaxy and Carriage Champion Beta B Protocol, Bittesweet procuded several successful show and pleasure horses. Martha showed one of these horses, Beta B Provocative (pictured left) in the carriage division, ultimately winning a World Chamption title. Though Bittersweet is not currently a breeding facility, this experience has only deepened our love for the Morgan breed.
